Lake Mývatn was formed by a large volcanic explosion and the whole area is still very active with frequent small tremors and geothermal
fields. The nutrient-rich water comes mainly from upwellings and is the basis for an exceptional rich birdlive, in particular
ducks. Even more frequent are the midges that in summer come to haunt the tourists.
Apart from the ducks there are more things to see around
the lake so better ignore the insects and get going.

Take a walk along the  pseudocraters of Skutustadir and admire
the strangely shaped lavapillars at Kalfastrond.
Dimmuborgir is a lava field with wierd rockformations, caves and collapsed lava tubes
A climb up the  black Hverfjall crater is strenuous but the view is extra rewarding.
At Barnarflag you can see the natural
setting for the controversial geothermal powerplant.

Very impressive is the solfatare field of Hverir near Mount Namafjall with
bubbling mudpots and steaming hot water.
