Since 2008 Skaftafell National Park is part of the Vatnajökull National Park. Skaftafell encompasses the region between the Skeidarárjökull and the
Skaftafellsjökull glacier, both being part of the massive Vatnajökull Glacier.

The park is named after a farm that was in operation
		till 1988.

The area is known for its pleasant climate with even some sunny days in summer, a rare feat in
		the rest of southern Iceland.

It makes Skaftafell a popular hiking and trecking destination for locals and tourists alike.

		A
well known and easy trail leads to the Svartifoss waterfall.
The fall sports many "hanging" hexagonal  black columns , the
		result of slowly cooled lava.

From atop the hill you have a very nice view on the large outwash plains that stretch
		towards the ocean.
