		In 1790 a special district was created along the Potomac River for a brand new federal capital for the USA. 
  
		Maryland and Virginia  
		both donated land for this noble purpose. 
  
		Called after the 1st president, 
Washington was founded in 1791 to accommodated  
		the Trias Politica of the US government: Congress, President and Supreme Court.
 
  
		During the 
Civil War Washington  
		sat at the border between the Union (Maryland) and the Confederation (Virginia). Many freed slaves fled to the capital.
 
  
		On September  
		11 2001 
Hani Hanjour flew a hijacked plane in the Pentagon, killing 190 people. 
 
  
		Most foreign embassies and many national  
		and international organisations and lobby groups are based in Washington DC.
  
		 
  
		The city sports many sites like Arlington  
		National Cemetery, the Vietnam Memorial, the Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. And do not forget the Smithsonian museums.
