Butterflies and Moths are particularly picky about their habitat, they prefer to lay their eggs on the leaves of a specific plant
or tree so that they can later be eaten by the caterpillars.

These so-called host plants largely determine where butterflies live.
A Painted Lady prefers thistles and mallow, Red-tipped Clearwings are fond of willows but Holly Blues are not so picky, as long as it is a sort of shrub.
Contrary to popular belief, not all Moths are nocturnal and you can spot several species in broad daylight. They do tend to stay in the shadow and often prefer the backside of leaves, making it harder to get a nice shot.
On a warm summer day, many species of butterflies and moths can be spotted fluttering around in the Empelse Waard and Hedelse Bovenwaard , feasting on nectar and looking for a partner.
I use a Canon SX70 HS camera. With its extreme focal length of 1365 mm you can get pretty good close-ups but depth of field can become an issue.
The photos are from 2022 onwards.
